Alice Sherman Quine

1945 - 2003

Dear Quine Folks,

Sadly, the 22nd of August will mark the one year anniversary of the death of Alice Sherman Quine. I couldn't tell you the exact time of death, though Quine called me at 6:30 p.m. and I was at his loft by 7:00 p.m. It's safe to assume that it was some time around 6:00 p.m. This, along with the death of Robert, is truly a sad day - it was the beginning of Robert's decline into the deepest depression of his life, the one which would ultimately cause him to take his life. As Quine's friend Hugh Shirato remarked at the burial of Robert's ashes: "Life without Alice no longer made any sense to him." So, if y'all think of it, wherever you might be at 6:00 p.m. EST, 3:00 p.m. on the west coast or 12:00 a.m. (23/8/04) in the UK, stop for a moment and think of the woman who Quine could not live without.

On a brighter note, I got the green light to put together enough songs for a Robert Quine Career Retrospective which I hope will amount to about 18 tracks. I'm looking for some input from you fans. Please submit your top 5 favorite Quine solos from the Voidoids to Lou Reed to Katy Clements to Andre Williams and everyone in between. Nothing's going to happen until Robert's estate gets settled - which could take some time - but once that's done I will get cracking on this project. I want to have all my ducks in a row before the estate is settled. The sale of some of his guitars will fund this project which I'm sure is going be to costly, but if there's one thing our beloved Quine deserves it's a career retrospective, don'tcha think? So send in those suggestions to: septemberstreet@netscape.net

All the best,

Michael Carlucci
